Can any instructor or player recommend a good video for a 15 year old high school
student who has no musical background?
Outside of quality 1:1 instruction, I wanted to offer my nephew a good video but haven't thought about this type of stuff for twenty years or kept up with the beginning videos out there.
I think the Weckl or Chapman stuff is great for establishing a good foundation, but is too advanced for the beginner. Yet, I might be wrong- maybe Dave's new video on technique is beneficial. I'm just not sure what will hold a 15YO's attention today.
Thanks!

For a 15 year old, I'd recommend any of the following:
Buddy Rich (the early years)
Weckl's Back to Basics or How to Develop Technique Videos
Simon Phillips Videos

I think the new Weckl technique Video is excellent but it might not be appropriate for such a young begginer.
Tommy Igoe has bought out a beginers video with DW that lookes like it might do the trick.
Afew years ago Tom Brechtlein bought out 4 videos that where quite short and to the point. Two beginers guides to Rock drumming and two beginers guides to Blues drumming that where on the DCI Label. I saw them and thought that they were great.
I'm sure most drum shops can still order them.

Tommy Igoe's Video is fantastic!
I am a very active drum educator with around 150 students and I make a point of viewing tapes aimed at beginners for research purposes.
Igoe presents a fun, entertaining video that gets you started straight away. He actually teaches three young students on the tape so it isn't as dry as some other videotapes available.
I would also strongly reccomend Ron Savage's book "Instant Drum Set" (Berklee Press)
This has been very successful with my students as it gets you playing along to backing tracks straight away so that the student develops strong timekeeping skills from the start. Also for once the backing tracks don't suck!!
The book deals with note values, grip/technique and grooves and fills in a varety of styles - it's th best book I've seen for the beginning student.

Joe Porcaro has a great video that would be the best. Not over the head and very easy to follow for an up and coming student.

I have to second David's recommendation. I think the Tommy Igoe video is great. It shows several kids playing the exercises with Tommy encouraging them and covers basic but important concepts every drummer should master and even features Tommy on a tune or two. It's at least an hour long and is well shot and recorded.
